How I Went from BROKE to building a 150k Portrait Business- and it wasn't what you think!
In 2020, COVID wiped out my commercial photography business almost overnight.
I had spent twelve years building an international career, photographing people including Robert De Niro, Roger Federer and Lewis Hamilton, with work published in magazines such as GQ and Esquire.
My commercial clients included Cartier, Channel, Emirates and Lenovo amongst many others.
Then COVID happened and my commercial clients completely disappeared.
I returned to my little island Jersey in debt, tail between my legs, with no studio, no local reputation as a photographer and little confidence in what everyday people would be likely to spend on portraits.
It didn't matter how glossy my work was or who I'd photographed. People here didn't know me. They didn't care about my commercial background. They needed a reason to book me — and the truth was, I didn't have one yet.
I set up a makeshift studio in a disused restaurant and started offering free portraits just to meet people, build trust, and prove my worth.
I thought I'd be lucky to scrape together a few hundred pounds per shoot.
And for a while, that's exactly what happened. £300 here and there. Not nearly enough to cover rent, bills, or groceries.
But then something unexpected happened.
I remembered advice from a mentor — a sales system I'd dismissed in the past because of my own money blocks and "that'll never work here" objections.
I decided to trust it and follow it to the letter.
And it worked.
Not just a little.
My very first client — using this system and pricing — spent £1,700. For a 40-minute portrait session. At their home.
